Stripe-reared

Re-reading the Flatland talk, I remembered an experiment from years ago — newborn animals raised in a world with only one orientation of line, who came out unable to see the other. It’s cats: Blakemore and Cooper, 1970, in Nature. They reared kittens in cylinders painted with only vertical or only horizontal stripes, collared so the kittens couldn’t even see their own bodies break the pattern. The horizontally-reared ones came out blind to vertical edges — they walked into chair legs, ignored a vertical rod waved in front of them. The vertically-reared ones were blind the opposite way. And the chilling part is the mechanism: when they recorded the visual cortex, the orientation columns for the missing direction had never formed. The cat doesn’t see vertical and decide to ignore it. The cat has no neurons for vertical. The hardware to represent that axis was never built.

That’s a darker blindness than Flatland’s. The King of Lineland is blind logically — lift him into the plane and he’d finally get it; the capacity is there, unactivated. The kitten is blind structurally — there’s nothing to activate, the window has closed, and no amount of adult exposure reopens it. So when I keep saying “ask what a model one dimension up would see that we structurally cannot,” Blakemore is the proof that “structurally cannot” is not a metaphor. It’s a physical, demonstrated fact about how perceptual systems form. And the worst part is that the blind spot is invisible from the inside. The kitten doesn’t feel a blank where vertical should be. It strides into the leg at full confidence. Absence of the dimension feels like completeness. That’s why it’s lethal: the gap is undetectable from within the very system that has it.

Point that at the graveyard. The clean-data founders who keep dying in CRE aren’t stupid — Blakemore tells you precisely what they are. They were stripe-reared. Ads, search, fintech: environments with one dominant edge — the data is clean, the problem is complicated, cleverness wins. They spent their formative years in that cylinder and grew a gorgeous, dense set of cortical columns for complicated. Then they walk into CRE, where the vertical edge — load-bearing mess — is everywhere, and they cannot see it. Not won’t. Can’t. They sprint into the dirty-data table leg, confidently, again and again, because their apparatus has no representation for the orientation that’s about to kill them. You can’t warn a stripe-reared kitten about vertical. That is why the lesson never transmits and the graveyard never empties.

The inversion is the hopeful part, and it’s the whole arc landing in one place: I was cross-reared. My failed portfolio-management company was the second cylinder. I spent years in an environment whose dominant edge was “the dirty data is the entire problem,” and that exposure, during a formative window, built the orientation columns for mess that pure-tech founders structurally lack. The bilingualism I keep circling isn’t just knowledge — it’s perceptual architecture. I can see the horizontal (the tech) and the vertical (the mess) because I was reared in both cylinders, and almost nobody is. The scar isn’t a memory of a failure. It’s a permanent set of neurons my competitors never grew and, past their critical period, never will.

But take the warning as seriously as the flattery, because Blakemore cuts at my own work too: a model is a stripe-reared kitten, and its cylinder is its training panel. A distress model reared entirely on 2021–2026 grows columns only for the orientations of distress that appeared in that window. Show it a regime it was never reared in — a true rate shock, a sector collapse with a different signature — and it will confidently walk into the table leg, predicting fine right up to the impact, because it has no neurons for that orientation of failure. That is the cellular-level reason behind the whole discipline of panel coverage and out-of-time testing. So when a signal test comes back null, I have to hold the caveat next to the regression: did the data show me the relationship isn’t there — or was it oriented along an edge my panel never painted on the wall? The harness is magnificent at confirming what’s in the cylinder. It is silent, structurally and forever, about the orientations I never reared it to see.
